Career Change into a New Field: Bridge Your Skills, Set a Prep Window

A career change template for anyone moving into a role they have never held, built to decide what to learn first and how long the preparation window runs. The whiteboard carries Will-Can-Must — what you want, what you can already do, and what the job postings require — alongside a matrix that ranks your missing skills by cost to learn and by how far your current experience transfers. The task board runs Researching → Learning → Building → Proven → In applications, with five parent tasks and 13 subtasks already queued, from collecting 10 postings to setting the budget and the dates. Instead of waiting for one more certificate, you end up with one piece of work finished in 30 hours, a walk-away line, and an application date you can put in the calendar.

Month one is nothing but this. e.g. You only know GA4 by name, so rebuild your Excel report as one GA4 report on live data. Worth it, but slow. Put exactly one item in the Building column and finish it in an hour a day for six weeks (30 hours). Never two at once. e.g. Put a small monthly ad budget behind your own blog and keep the log. Your experience does not carry, but it is cheap. Clear it on the commute or on weekends, enough to answer if asked in an interview. e.g. Run a personal account for three months and log the weekly climb from 0 to 500 followers. Costs time and money, and your experience does not carry. If it is only a nice-to-have, leave it and revisit once you are hired. e.g. The ad certification exam can wait until the job actually calls for it. 1. Learn the threePick one course and finish it. Size it to an hour a day for four weeks. 2. Build somethingBuild one piece within what you learned. Size it to an hour a day for six weeks (30 hours). 3. Publish and fixGet two improvement notes from someone in the field. Keeping the before and after proves you take feedback. 4. Use it in your jobUse it once in your current work and record the time saved or the volume added. Now it is a result, not a gap. 5. Apply to threeSend the piece and the numbers with it. Log which result went to which posting. Cap courses and exam fees at a set monthly amount. Anything above it is off the table Keep six months of living costs in savings the whole way through Prepare while employed. Studying after you quit runs on soft deadlines Apply once you meet 60% of the must-haves and have one piece finished. Do not wait for ready or perfect Three live processes at a time. Log each rejection reason in one line Rewrite the resume for each role. A recycled one will not get through Six months in with 0 of 10 resumes passing, rethink the role or how you present it Three interviews in a row flagging the same gap, go back to studying Study time under five hours a week for three weeks running, rebuild the plan
