Study Notes for Beginners: Mind Map a Unit and Relearn Terms Until You Can Explain Them

A study notes template for beginners to review a science or social studies unit alone with a mind map and relearn the terms until you can explain them to a friend. The whiteboard has four boards. Board 1 lists the unit, today's aim and a table of terms with one-line meanings. Board 2 is a concept map (terms joined by relation words) with the unit in the center and 4 key terms on branches. Board 3 sorts the links into can explain, fuzzy and don't know and decides what to relearn. Board 4 uses a 4-step script to explain to a friend and sets what to do next and by when. The task board has four columns - To do, In progress, Checking by explaining, Learned - with 4 parent tasks and 3 subtasks each. Do not just memorize terms; write in your own words how they connect. The example is the 8th grade science unit How photosynthesis works, so swap in your own unit. Good for test review and class preparation.
