Requirements Gathering for Beginners: Interview the Requester and Agree on Scope

Junior engineers and in-house IT staff learning requirements gathering for the first time use this beginner template to interview the requester and agree on scope in one whiteboard. The whiteboard has 4 pages - page 1 asks about the purpose and current process, page 2 lists functional and non-functional requirements, page 3 sorts them with MoSCoW into today's scope, and page 4 confirms the agreement and schedule with the requester. The task board has 5 columns - to ask, sorting, awaiting confirmation, agreed, and done - with 4 parent tasks matching the 4 pages and 3 subtasks each. If you're unsure how to run a requirements interview, rewrite the "e.g." examples for your own request and work through the pages in order to turn missed questions into open items before fixing the scope. Keep company names and deal figures off the board you show the requester, and confirm contractual liability and estimates separately with your own team.
