User Interviews for Beginners: Ask 5 People About Past Behavior, Group Notes, Pick What to Build

Solo developers and small teams improving a product use this user interview template for beginners to interview five customers, group their quotes, and decide what to build next. Page 1 sets what you want to learn, the five people (A to E), and a question guide of good and bad questions. Page 2 turns each 30-minute talk into notes on what they said, did, and found surprising, then compares all five in a table. Page 3 groups similar notes, adds headings afterward, and narrows pain points to three. Page 4 sets what to build or fix with an owner, deadline, and check, and fixes your questions for next time. The task board has five columns and 4 parent tasks with 3 subtasks each. Ask about past behavior, such as when they last did something, not future wishes. Try affinity mapping, naming groups only after gathering similar notes, with a budgeting app example, alone or with a team. Interviewees are called A to E, never by name.
