Recover From Rejection: Fix the Stage You Keep Losing and Lift Your Pass Rate

A rejection recovery template for job seekers who keep getting rejected at the resume screen or in interviews and want to diagnose the cause stage by stage and lift their pass rate. The whiteboard lays out pass rates by stage, a log of every company applied to, a Five Whys chain that asks why five times down to the root cause, and an impact-versus-effort matrix for choosing the fix. The task board runs across five columns, from Logged and Hypothesis through Fix chosen and Testing to Result checked, with five parent tasks - find where you drop, name likely causes, pick one fix, test on three companies, steady yourself - and 13 subtasks, all unstarted. Instead of writing rejections off as bad luck, the job search narrows to one change at a time, and two to four weeks later the numbers show whether the pass rate actually moved.

Big impact, slow to build. Rebuilding the numbers from your last role sits here - do the groundwork only this week. e.g. Add 15 minutes to read the must-haves before applying, and rewrite the opening three lines for that company. Pick one from here. Studying for a certification, or rebuilding the resume from scratch. Not the cause of these losses, and applying stops while you do it. Typos and file names. Clean them up alongside the fix, but keep them out of the measurement. Change one thing at a time - change two and you learn nothing Hold the same fix for three companies before you judge it Two weeks maximum - an open-ended test just drifts Three applications a week, no more, or the log goes thin On the day a rejection lands, no applying and no rewriting Rewrite “I am not good enough” as “that fix missed” Book one day a week off the search, in advance
