Backcasting for Beginners: Picture Year Three, Then Plan Backward to This Month
A beginner backcasting template for teams of 4 to 7 who want to picture their goal three years out first, then work backward to milestones and this month's actions. The four whiteboard pages can be written together with limited-visibility team members. Page 1 sets the period and describes year three and today in three areas (customers, ways of working, and the team). Page 2 traces the milestones backward from year three to next month. Page 3 sets the condition that shows each milestone is reached and picks the first missing thing to fill. Page 4 turns it into this month's actions with owners and deadlines, plus review days. The task board has five columns, from Draw and write out to Done, with four parent tasks and three subtasks each. Building up from today fills a plan with only what seems doable, so backcasting reverses the order. The boards include examples, so a first-timer can rewrite them from page 1.
